Institutional Overview

The vision that drives the Associate's Degree in Nursing program at Baker College is a future where patients/clients consistently experience caring nurses that promote their well being in mind, body, and spirit. This vision incorporates a patient/client-nurse experience that positively affects both parties and results in a heightened public awareness of nursing as the caring, healing, health profession. Through an approved program of study, the faculty seeks to prepare graduates with an associate's degree in nursing who upon graduation will be eligible to take the licensure examination to become registered nurses (RNs). Nursing students will be assisted to develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills essential to the practice of professional nursing through active, participatory and culturally diverse learning. The curriculum is designed to assist students to become critical thinkers and problem solvers with an appreciation for the moral, ethical, and cultural dimensions of the issues they confront in an ever evolving health care system. The Michigan Board of Nursing may deny RN licensure to an applicant who has been convicted of a crime or is addicted to drugs or alcohol. Enrollment is limited for this program. All nursing programs must complete the approval process of the Michigan Board of Nursing. The nursing programs within the Baker College system have been approved. Baker College of Cadillac and Muskegon have received initial approval from the Michigan Board of Nursing. Baker College of Clinton Township, Flint and Owosso have received full approval from the Michigan Board of Nursing.

Courses

NUR 152 - Maternal/Child Nursing Practicum

Course Description

Assists students in applying theory and developing competence in utilizing the nursing process to provide care for families in the childbearing cycle. The effects of cultural, ethnic, spiritual, and psychosocial factors will be emphasized. Principles of family theory are integrated in the care of the childbearing families. 60 hours of clinical are required.

1.       Apply critical thinking skills and problem-solving methods for decision making within the context of the nursing process to provide nursing care to the childbearing family.

2.       Demonstrate transpersonal caring with increasing independence in the performance of safe therapeutic nursing interventions to the childbearing family.

3.       Apply current research findings to nursing practice related to childbearing and woman’s health.

4.       Assess cultural, ethnic, spiritual, and psychosocial factors that may affect health care, and apply caring techniques that are culturally sensitive.

5.       Correlate the interrelationship between the global environment and the care of the childbearing family.

6.       Utilize effective communication skills to establish therapeutic nurse-family relationships.

7.       Apply principles of teaching and learning to childbearing families.

8.       Work collaboratively with other team members to achieve health goals of the childbearing family.

9.       Demonstrate behaviors that reflect the standards of professional nursing when interacting with colleagues, faculty, staff, clients, and families.

10.   Deliver customer service in a holistic and compassionate manner to the childbearing family.

11.   Analyze ethical and legal issues influencing the healthcare of the childbearing family.

NUR 103 - Nursing Fundamentals Practicum

Course Description

Introduces students to the provision of nursing care for the adult client in a long-term health care setting. Basic nursing skills will be utilized. Students will apply the nursing process through participation in basic nursing care of adult clients in uncomplicated health care situations. 60 clinical hours are required.

1.       Apply the nursing process in the care of adult clients (Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation and modification of plan).

2.       Perform therapeutic nursing interventions using fundamental nursing skills learned in the classroom and lab and apply Jean Watson’s carative factors to a client situation.

3.       Utilize available resources at the agency/facility, at the school library, and on the internet, to research additional information related to client health situations.

4.       Select and utilize client data including cultural influences to make appropriate decisions regarding nursing care.

5.       Identify and describe the impact healthcare has on the global environment.

6.       Demonstrate effective interpersonal and written communication (documentation) with the adult client and healthcare team.

7.       Observe, interact, and collaborate with other members of the health care team.

8.       Demonstrate accountability and responsibility for own professional behavior and development.

9.       Demonstrate the ability to provide quality customer service as a commitment to the client/family and as the primary focus of all nursing care.

10.   Identify the legal and ethical responsibilities for nursing care in a healthcare environment.

NUR 122 - Medical/Surgical Nursing I Practicum

Course Description

Provides a clinical opportunity for students to apply the nursing process to medical/surgical nursing care in the acute care setting. Students, under the supervision of a clinical instructor, will practice nursing assessment and nursing management skills in the care of the adult client with altered health conditions. 90 clinical hours are required

NUR 162 - Nursing Care of Children and Their Families Practicum

Course Description

Provides the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills to the care of children and their families, as students apply the nursing process to this patient population. Jean Watson's carative factors will be used to analyze clinical experiences. A multidisciplinary team approach is emphasized. 60 hours of clinical are required.

NUR 212 - Nursing Care of the Elderly and Terminally Ill Practicum

Course Description

4.       Compare healthy aging to culturally-influenced common believes about the aging process.

5.       Correlate the interrelationship between the global environment and the care of an aging population.

6.       Model effective communication strategies that are therapeutic with the elderly and terminally ill clients.

7.       Contribute as a participant within a multidisciplinary team to meet the needs of the elderly and terminally ill clients.

8.       Demonstrate behaviors that reflect the standards of professional nursing in the care of the elderly and terminally ill clients.

NUR 202 - Mental Health Nursing Practicum

Course Description

Focuses on the application of theory from the Mental Health Nursing course. Students will have opportunities to practice nursing assessment and interventions based on the Standards of Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nursing Practice. A variety of clinical settings across the continuum of care will be used. Contemporary society problems relevant to community mental health and impact on quality of care will be explored as students apply the nursing process. 60 hours of clinical are required.

4.       Apply caring techniques that are culturally sensitive based on the awareness of the influence of culture on mental health.

5.       Relate the effects of nursing interventions beyond the immediate mental health care environment to the global society.

6.       Model effective communication strategies that are therapeutic with people with mental illness.

7.       Work collaboratively with other team members and across the continuum of care to achieve health goals of the mental health client.

8.       Apply standards of nursing practice to the self-evaluation process regarding personal beliefs about mental illness, and accompanying professional behavior.

9.       Display customer service as a commitment to the holistic and compassionate care of people with mental illness.

10.   Analyze the impact of ethical, legal, social, political, and economic factors on mental health care.

NUR 232 - Medical/Surgical Nursing II Practicum

Course Description

Provides practice opportunities for students to acquire and practice advanced technical skills and application of the nursing process in caring for the adult client with acute and chronic medical conditions. Comprehensive knowledge and skills gained throughout the nursing program will be applied to medical-surgical, critical care, emergency, and perioperative phases as they occur across the lifespan. The professional growth of the nursing student is realized as one accomplishes this clinical experience. 180 hours of clinical are required.
