 Oakwood Annapolis Hospital, a primary care facility, opened its doors to western Wayne County in 1957. In over 50 years, this 247-bed, full-service hospital has come to offer leading healthcare to the community, through a combination of quality care and state-of-the-art technology. 

The Oakwood Annapolis team offers many services ranging from 24-hour emergency care, surgical services, laboratory and radiology, rehabilitation medicine and a comprehensive birthing center with private labor and delivery suites. In 2007, OAH was also designated a winner of The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for knee and hip replacement.

Nursing Units


PREOPERATIVE/POSTOPERATIVE DEPARTMENT

Unit Description

The Pre and Postoperative unit is a 34 bed, fast paced department. Preoperative cubicles are semi-private and spacious to accommodate family members prior to surgery. The department has 3 private rooms, including a pediatric room. Unit design allows the ability to flex pre and postoperative beds should the need arise. The Pre and post operative department manage care for patients from multiple services including gynecology, orthopedics, neurology, urology, oral, ENT, podiatry, general, cardiovascular, general, ophthalmology, and hand cases. The new Operating Rooms, which opened in January 2004, have seven OR suites with state of the art equipment.



PRE-ANESTHESIA DEPARTMENT

Unit Description

The Pre-Anesthesia Department is a vital department to supporting the needs of surgical patient. Registered nurses help to obtain necessary tests; history and orders to ensure patients have a successful and safe surgical stay. The office is equipped with 4 private exam rooms and a workroom in which the nurses have the ability to obtain information by phone. This department includes staff from admitting, to support improved communication and convenience for the surgical patient. The nursing staff work closely with and has the support of Anesthesia department. Our close rapport with the preoperative staff, surgeons and anesthesia allows for continued growth and development.



SHORT STAY

Unit Description

The Short Stay Unit (SSU), is a fast paced, 14 bed unit, with eight of the beds being monitored. The unit is designed to care for patients that may not meet criteria for admission, but require additional observation and monitoring to determine further treatment needs. Patients are admitted to the SSU for up to 23 hours and vary in diagnosis, age and diagnostic requirements. Out patient surgical patients and short stay surgical patients are cared for here.



EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Unit Description

The Oakwood Annapolis Emergency Department (ED) is an active 29-bed unit that provides care for patients with cardiac, obstetric, traumatic, psychiatric, pediatric and medical/surgical emergencies. This ED treats over 47,000 patients each year.

The ED patient care staff is a highly integrated team of registered nurses, unit secretaries, ED assistants (basic EMT’s), paramedics, social workers, and respiratory therapists.



ENDOSCOPY DEPARTMENT

Unit Description

The Endoscopy department, with its 12 pre and post beds, offers extended hours to accommodate patients and physicians. The department is fast paced with a large volume of cases. Preoperative cubicles are semi-private and spacious to accommodate family members prior to procedure. The unit is designed to be able to flex pre and post procedure beds the need arises.



SURGICAL SERVICES

Unit Description

Annapolis Surgical Services moved to a brand new building attached to the main hospital in January 2004. The beautiful surroundings are also home to state of the art technology. There are seven computer integrated OR suites. The floors are free of clutter and cords, as equipment is positioned on ceiling mounted booms. The nurse can control all the equipment from a touch panel at the computer desk in each OR. Surgical specialties include General, Gynecology, Orthopedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Urology, Vascular and Podiatry.



FOURTH FLOOR MEDICAL-SURGICAL UNIT

Unit Description

The Fourth Floor is a 66 bed medical surgical unit that specializes in the care of geriatric patients. The seventeen local nursing homes provide the hospital with many admissions, and our staff is dedicated to the care, health and healing of each patient. Staff has received special training in caring for the skin, medical, emotional and nutritional needs of the elderly.



THIRD FLOOR MEDICAL-SURGICAL UNIT

Unit Description

3rd Floor Medical Surgical is a 41-bed unit with 10 spacious private rooms and 31 semi-privates all with in room showers designed with patient comfort in mind. Every semi-private is equipped with a computer. We specialize in the treatment of patients with multiple chronic conditions including: Diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Surgical specialties include General, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Urology, Vascular and podiatry. The unit’s vision is to provide a high level of service while taking care of patient's basic needs. Pain control and ambulation are important on our priority list. Patients range in age from 18 to 100. RN staff is supported by Nurse Aide Specialists who have been trained in additional skills such as pulse oximetry, vital signs, glucose testing, and simple dressing changes.



INTERMEDIATE MEDICAL CARE UNIT

Unit Description

The Intermediate Medical Care is a 40 -bed telemetry mixed medical surgical step down unit. They are a fast paced unit providing comprehensive care to the adult population. The types of patients seen are 23-hour chest pain, rule out MI, CHF requiring vasoactive drips, arrhythmia management, and syncope.



INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Unit Description

The Intensive Care Unit is a 16 bed, medical-surgical ICU. This is a fast-paced unit where patients may be hemodynamically unstable and require either IABP or Swan Ganz monitoring. This ICU is committed to providing a sound multidisciplinary approach to patient care that is based on best practices. They have been successful at reducing, and in some cases eliminating, Vent associated pneumonia, Catheter related blood stream infections and have been rated 5 stars for caring for the patient with Severe Sepsis on the Healthgrades web site.



BIRTHING CENTER

Unit Description

The 2007/2008 total renovation of the Birthing Center at Oakwood Annapolis Hospital allows patients all the comforts of a home delivery plus the added security of exceptional hospital personnel and state of the art equipment. The unit is now equipped with 11 labor, delivery, recovery and port-partum rooms (LDRP), 2 antepartum rooms, a 3 bed triage area, 2 OR’s and a 2 bed recovery unit. The new, fully private LDRP rooms are organized by zones for the mother, family, physicians, nurses and baby in order to provide optimal care. If a baby is born prematurely or develops complications that need constant medical supervision, our Neonatal Intensive Care professionals offer 24-hour comprehensive care.
