Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center (OHMC) has 658 beds, and is a full-service teaching hospital in partnership Wayne State University that has served southeast Michigan for more than 50 years. OHMC is the tertiary hub for the three community hospitals of the Oakwood Healthcare System, providing high-level clinical care in a setting designed around the individuality of each patient. OHMC has also been recognized as a "100 Top " cardiology hospital for the seventh time in eight years.

Medical/Surgical Unit - 10 South

Unit Description

10 South is a 32 bed general medical unit with 8 flex monitors for non-invasive cardiac monitoring. They provide care to patients with a variety of diagnosis including surgical orthopedics.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 9 North

Unit Description

9 North is a 32 bed fast paced med/surg unit. They care for a variety of medical patients including CHF, dehydration, cellulites, diabetes, DVT, and stable cardiac related issues needing monitoring.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 9 South

Unit Description

9 South is a 32 bed general medial unit with a geriatric focus. The unit has 12 flex monitors for non-invasive cardiac monitoring. They provide care to patients with a variety of diagnosis including diabetic patients.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 8 North

Unit Description

8 North is a 23 bed adult medical unit with a renal focus. The unit has 8 flex monitors for non-invasive cardiac monitoring. They provide care to patients with a variety of diagnosis focusing mainly on the renal patient.



Medical/Surgical Unit - Hemodialysis

Unit Description

Hemodialysis is a 7-station department handling acute and chronic dialysis patients. Baxter Dialysis machines provide dialysis to patients on this unit as well as in the critical care areas.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 8 South

Unit Description

8 South is an advance progressive care unit. There are 32 beds and the unit specializes in the care of patients with respiratory diseases. The primary diagnoses include Pneumonia, COPD, CHF and vent dependent patients awaiting long term care. There are 8 flex monitors.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 7 North

Unit Description

7 North is a fast-paced 32-bed neurosurgical unit with telemetry monitoring capabilities. The unit treats a wide variety of neuro related diseases and conditions with a specialized focus on stroke and spinal surgery. A strong partnership with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitative services helps provide timely and appropriate therapies to support treatment regimes.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 7 South

Unit Description

7 South is a 32 bed orthopedic /surgical unit with the availability of 8 flex monitors. Through the collaborative efforts of the orthopedic interdisciplinary team an orthopedic template was created. All patients with a hip/knee replacement or fracture are placed on the template. This guides all levels of the team in providing exceptional consistent quality care to the patients.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 6 North

Unit Description

6 North is a 32-bed surgical urology unit. There are 8 flex monitors for patients needing basic cardiac monitoring. The unit is also considered a surgical Advanced Progressive Care Unit, which cares for patients who need more frequent monitoring, and require additional care.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 6 South

Unit Description

6 South
is a 32-bed general surgery unit focusing on the care of general surgical patients, post ostomy and trach patients, abs bariatric surgical patients. An Enterostomal Therapist works closely with the staff and provides numerous educational opportunities. There are 8 flex monitors.



Medical/Surgical Unit - 5 North

Unit Description

5 North
is a 22-bed medical oncology unit. Patient care is provided to oncology patients, hospice patients, and general internal medicine patients. There are 8 flex monitors.



Critical Care Unit - Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)

Unit Description

Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)
is an 18-bed unit that specializes in the care of cardiac patients, vent patients and patients requiring hemodynamic monitoring. Our client base includes patients with complicated AMI’s, cardiogenic shock, as well as critical medical patients.



Critical Care Unit - 4 North/Monitored Care Unit

Unit Description

4 North/Monitored Care Unit
is a 28 bed interventional cardiac step down unit. The unit provides care to patients with chest pain, AMI, CHF, pre and post op cardiac catherizations, and post op electrophysiology patients. The unit is fast paced and has a high acuity with RN staff providing interventional care to patients i.e., Cardizem IV, NTG, Insulin drips, etc. The length of stay on the unit is 2.2 days. Each patient is on a flex monitor.



Critical Care Unit - 4 North/Intermediate Cardiac Care Unit

Unit Description

4 South /Intermediate Cardiac Care Unit
is a 32 bed monitored cardiac step –down unit providing competent, compassionate quality care to patients with a variety of cardiac conditions including congestive heart failure, arrhythmias unstable angina and myocardial infarction. One element of care involves pre and post procedure care for patients undergoing invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, coronary and peripheral vascular stenting, electro physiologic studies and defibrillator/ pacemaker implantation.



Critical Care Unit - Cardiovascular Care Unit (CVCU)

Cardiovascular Care Unit (CVCU)
opened January 2006 as a 16-bed unit cardio-thoracic unit providing immediate postoperative care to the open heart patient who will remain in this state-of-the-art facility until discharge. This novel approach has earned Oakwood Hospital recognition as one of the top 100 cardiac hospitals in the nation. The CVCU unit is a highly advanced unit designed to deliver the best holistic care to patient and families.



Critical Care Unit - Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

Unit Description

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
is a 17 bed medical, surgical, neurological, and cardio-thoracic unit. ICU cares for a variety of diagnoses and patient conditions including patients after major surgical procedures, patients with multi-system failures, multiple trauma, severely unstable patients, and ventilated patients.



Critical Care Unit - 3 North/Acute Care Unit (ACU)

Unit Description

3 North/ Acute Care Unit (ACU)
is an 11-bed intensive care unit. The unit provides care to critically ill patients requiring arterial lines, ventilators, swan ganz lines, etc. who have undergone major surgery or who have multi system failure. Hemodynamic monitoring and ICP monitoring are frequently done along with ventilator management.



Critical Care Unit - 3 South and 3 West

Unit Description

3 South and 3 West
are 16 beds and 12 beds Intermediate Intensive Care Units respectively. Both units have the same patient population. The patient population consists of, but is not limited to, chronic pulmonary patients that may or may not be vented, fresh surgical patients such as CEA’s, Laminectomy’s, and Exploratory Lap’s, and a large variety of medical patients requiring close monitoring.



OB Service - Labor & Delivery

Unit Description

Labor & Delivery
is a Level 3 Birthing Center that is fast paced and provides care to a diverse patient population. High-Risk and normal pregnant woman from teen pregnancies to the more complex women who have experienced problems related to infertility are cared for. This is a state of the art unit, which has 14 Private LDR rooms, 3 Operating Suites, a 3 bed Recovery-room, and a 6 bed Triage Unit. As a Level 3 Unit, Labor & Delivery also serves as an Outreach Facility to several area hospitals. The number of deliveries is over 5,000/year.



OB Service - Mother/Baby Unit

Mother/Baby Unit
encompasses 113 beds for all obstetrical patients, antepartum and post partum patients, and newborns.



OB Service - Antepartum

Unit Description

Antepartum
is an 8 bed Level 3 Birthing Center with a focus on women with high risk pregnancies. The unit works closely with Labor and Delivery and Maternal Fetal Medicine.



OB Service - Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Unit Description

Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
is a 30 bed level 3 critical care unit. They care for the smallest of the neonates to term. The NICU is made up of four joining pods and one pod down the hall from these. Each pod is set up to take care of the most critical neonate.



OB Service - Pediatrics

Unit Description

Pediatrics
is a 30 bed pediatric unit with patients ranging in age from newborns to 17 year old. Nursing care is also provided for general medical/surgical patients and short stay adult patients who have had myleograms, cholecystectomies, and hernia repairs.



Surgical Services

Unit Description

Surgical Services is located in the Surgical Pavilion, which opened January of 2006. The department is equipped with a state-of-the-art computer routing system for video information and imaging and consists of 17 inpatient operating rooms (3 for open heart) and an 8 bay prep holding area. A central processing department is located on the ground floor complete with a computerized instrument tracking system, a self-contained heart center for both pre, peri and post operative cardiac care. The second floor joined with the existing Out Patient Surgery Center to house the remaining surgical specialties with a combined 20 O.R. suites and a Cystoscopy suite along with a 42 bed



Surgical Services - POHA/PACU

Unit Description

POHA/PACU and 12 bay Phase 2 recovery. The Interventional Vascular Room has a rail-mounted c-arm that can be used for open or minimally invasive procedures. All services are represented including Cardio-Thoracic, EENT, General, GYN, Laser, Neurosurgery, Oral, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Plastic, Urology and Vascular. Each service actively performs minimally invasive surgery to include Endoscopic Spine Surgery, Stealth Navigation for Brain Tumors and Sinusendoscopy, Endoscopic Vein Harvesting, Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass, Laparoscopic Cholecytectomy, Nephrectomy, Appendectomy, Herniorrhaphy, Bowel Resection and Hysterectomy as well as Thorocoscopy and Endoscopic AAA.



Emergency Department

Unit Description

Emergency Department
is a 56 bed, Level II, fast paced emergency department that provides care to over 90,000 patients per year. The department is physically arranged in ‘pod’ settings that provides for privacy, cardiac monitoring and a team approach to patient care.



Emergency Department Observation Unit

Unit Description

Emergency Department Observation Unit
is a fast-paced 18 bed fully cardiac monitored unit designed to provide care to patients that may not meet criteria for admission, but may need observation by trained healthcare personnel. This transitional unit’s goal is to actively monitor patients up to 24 hours by completing further diagnostic testing and requesting appropriate consultants that fully assess the patient’s needs.
